While watching this last night, I kept telling myself, “I’m not sure why any of this is happening, but I’m glad I’m seeing it happen.” Which sounds (and admittedly is)cryptic, but with good reason.
The Last Circus is an over the top, unflinchingly violent tragic-comic allegory of the Spanish Civil War-as represented by two psychotic clowns and their entanglement in a frenzied love triangle with a gorgeous cunt of an acrobat. While a bit unintelligible at times(and slightly inconsistent), the film makes up for it in inventiveness, in it’s joyous exaltations of extreme brutality and in it’s strikingly beautiful, gritty cinematography.
If anything, it was the strangest thing I’ve seen in a while. Which was nice.
I watched this with James last week and I absolutely agree- strange is an understatement. Much of the inspiration for the “Sad Clown” piece was drawn from this film.
